چکیده

High tier wireless systems such as GPRS and UMTS provide users high mobility but less bandwidth. On the other hand, low tier wireless systems such as Wireless LAN offer high bandwidth with less mobility. To support seamless roaming between heterogeneous wireless networks is regarded as one of the key issues in the future mobile communication system. The paper presents method and system for seamless roaming between UMTS and WLAN networks. The two networks are assumed to construct and operate independently, but wish to offer roaming services to their customers. A new logical node, called Virtual GPRS Support Node (VGSN), is designed for this purpose to connect UMTS and WLAN core networks. VGSN is a normal GPRS Support Node (GSN) in a UMTS system and also acts as an access route in a WLAN network. The node converts control signals and routes data packets between two networks for roaming users. With the presented approach, mobile IP is not required and users can have a seamless roaming between networks based on one IP address.

Common radio resource management for WLAN-UMTS integration at radio access level

WLAN-UMTS integration in the UMTS-based approach can be performed either at the UMTS Core Network (CN) or Radio Access Network (UTRAN). Both interworking solutions provide the operator with additional license-free bandwidth and promise good handover performance. Integration at the radio access level has the advantage that the UMTS core network protocols remain unaffected and the interworking ar...

Performance Comparison of UMTS/WLAN Integrated Architectures with Dynamic Home Agent Assignments

Wireless local area networks (WLANs) are providing the most economical means of internet access. However, their access is very much limited. They can be deployed in a large scale by integrating them with cellular networks such as universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS); general packet radio services (GPRS) etc. A seamless roaming between these two heterogeneous networks can be ensured ...

Design Architectures for 3G and IEEE 802.11 WLAN Integration

Wireless LAN access networks show a strong potential in providing a broadband complement to Third Generation (3G) cellular systems. 3G networks provide a wider service area, and ubiquitous connectivity with low-speed data rates as compared to Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). WLAN networks offer higher data rate and the easy compatibility to wired Internet, but cover smaller areas. Integrat...

A Tiered Mobility Management Solution for Cellular/WLAN Integrated Networks with Low Handoff Delay

Demand for the Internet services through GPRS/3G networks is proliferating day-by-day. But low bit rate puts constraints on multimedia or mobile business services. In contrast, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) provide high bit rate with low deployment cost. Therefore, integration of these two complementary systems would be the focus of next generation wireless networks. However mobility and...
